Resourceful light for indoors activities. 🔦

/about.

Torch is a multifunctional wall lamp that serves as a flashlight. It draws from nature to recreate how our ancestors used to carry light around with a lit up stick to explore. Torch seeks to bring the experience back with a modern approach through CMF and Jakob's Law in UX: Familiarity.

When I was a kid, I used to play with my older siblings as though we were explorers, alongside a flashlight that acted as a torch within what seemed to be tall corridors in my old home. When it was getting late, I would sneak it under my sheets to read my favorite comics.

Light as a resourceful tool ignites creativity and productivity. Kids have the tendency to let familiar objects act as their desired tool: a light saber, a sword or even a torch. This brings the opportunity of relying on functional objects within the home with the flexibility of adapting to a child's perspective as well.

/form.

Like a branch in the modern world.

The form needs to be intuitive when it comes to grip, and the ability to redirect light. It also needs to be subtle and non-disruptive. When designing, I envisioned the ease of use in cylindrical shapes, using the extrusion where it connect to its base to withstand the hand properly.

/development

Pragmatic and relevant.

Given the nature of the shape, through some analysis and cross-sectioning, I was able to identify the overall functionality and dimensions of the desired form.

The warmth of yellow in consumer electronics.

Rather than a saturated color that prompts warmth, it brings joy, and life to the world of technology. This gave me a glimpse of the CMF, where yellow as an accent color will bring connotations of light while both silver and white would bespeak about the industrial era.

Redirect your beam onwards.

01/      By spinning and pulling the cap upwards, a one-sided beam of LED light is revealed, allowing the user to visualize what is ahead of his/her field of view without disrupting them directly.

02/       When closed, it can be used independently as a flashlight. When it is past bed-time you can detach it from its base to read your comics or do your homework underneath your sheets.

Powder-coated aluminum. #FFFFFF
Only four fifths of the outer shell remains pure white. The material itself has impact-resistance and durability for lighting
with 15% of glass fibre.

Aluminum.
For better luminosity, the refractivity of the raw material helps the light deflect in its flashlight mode.

Diffused Polycarbonate.
This material allows the intensity of the light to be uniform, while providing durability.

🔋

Take it anywhere all powered up.

It comes with an easy-to-hang rechargeable base, consisting of a Li-ion Battery, wired to a responsive PCB that bridges the brightness and color with the app.

/user experience

Familiarity in the user interface.

Smart lights are common in the market, and so are their counterpart apps that allow you to to control them wirelessly.

My approach on the UI was to rely on the
mental model of previous apps. Jakob's Law suggests that the user already has expectations on the interface based on the previous apps they have interacted with. For instance, swiping an asset is an intuitive approach when dealing with many of the same nature in a row.

/usage

Sync your device in a matter of seconds.

Keeping it interactive in three easy steps makes the experience less overwhelming. The less choices the user have, the less time it takes to navigate.

Moreover, the user is also able to keep track of their device in terms of charge and color intensity. This allows torch to be individual and fitting in any desired context.
