/background.
The kitchen is the heart of our home.
In Latin America, where I grew up, cooking is how we bond with our family members, where the kitchen is the haven of social interaction. Because of that, cooking should evoke warmth and interaction.
/about.
Parmigiano Reggiano "asked a couple of talented chefs to create masterful dishes that can serve as inspiration for the entries" The recipe I chose was from Chef Michel, who reinvented the southern style grits with an array of diverse ingredients and textures.
Steam is a modular pan that tackles the subject of diversity and sustainability through the exploration of a CMF that evokes a playful, interactive and warmth approach when cooking.
Porcini Polenta Cakes With Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese
/problem
Kitchen products already feel cool 🥶 - literally.
86% of users described pots and pans with words like silver, metal, dark and heavy. Metals like this evoke a feeling of coldness, when cooking should bring warm.
/inspiration.
It already looks like breakfast in the morning. 🍳
A CMF that relies on a warm palette whilst mimicking the appearance of a fried egg. This as inspiration brings a playful and innovative approach in kitchen pans, making the cooking experience look tasteful.
/design
A strong material behaving like paper. 🧻
The idea came by accident when I was prototyping with chipboard. Chipboard and hot steam do not blend but bend. Literally. But what if I bent the design on purpose allowing a seamless exit for the steam.
/cmf
It mimics the palette of the dish. 🧀
Orange stripe to represents the stripes of cheese used in the dish, made out of bio elastomer, and the rest is made of a cream-colored iron-cast with ceramic coating for longetivity.
/the handle.
Ergonomic for better comfort of your index finger and thumb when cooking.
/smaller scale prototypes on chipboard.
*chipboard does not get along with hot steam*
/prototyping
Just a pinch of steam and balance.
It needs just a pinch of a lift when peeking through our food when it is cooking. With this in mind, I needed to make sure the spacing was comfortable enough. I damaged a few prototypes in the process.
